STRIP CROPPING-DEFINITION,USE&TYPES

DEFINITION
It is a method of farming in which two or more crops are grown simultaneously into long narrow strips wide enough to permit independent cultivation but narrow enough to interact agronomical. It means strips are alternated in a crop rotation system. It is the practice of growing the series of alternate strips of various crops in such a manner that all tillage and management practices are performed across the slope.

STRIP CROPPING
USE
Strip cropping is an agronomic soil conservation measure. It helps to stop soil erosion and maintain soil fertility. It control runoff erosion and also wind erosion.

TYPES
Width of the strips is generally determined by feature of the slope and wind velocity at the site. A minimum width of 50 feet (15 m) is ideal for the use of most farm equipment.

  1. Strip intercropping– the field is divided into strips, but the strips are narrower and contiguous. This facilitates modern farm machinery as well as allowing adjoining plants to benefit from synergistic growth effects.
  2. Contour Strip cropping- it is the method of growing soil exposing and erosion permitting crops in strips across the slopes on contour and alternating with strip of soil protecting and erosion resistant crops. Thus this system shortens the length of slope, checks runoff and increase water absorption. It is used mainly on gentle slope gradients.
  3. Field Strip cropping- it is useful for soil of regular slope. Farm crops are grown in more or less parallel strips across uniform slopes, but not on exact contour.
  4. Wind Strip cropping- keeping in mind the wind direction, tall growing plants are grown alternatively with low growing crops in straight and long narrow parallel strips across the direction of wind. So the objective is to control wind erosion.
